They are the kind of people you would like to know, people who would be fun to hang out with over beer and pizza. It has many of the familiar elements, romance, suspense, light humor, and good people who you can’t help liking. If you like Nora Roberts, as I do, there is a lot to like in Shelter in Place. Really, her books should come with a warning label–don’t start until you are ready to read to the end. I planned to read this in April, closer to its release date, but I made the mistake of picking it up and reading the first chapter. Nora Roberts knows how to write a compulsive read that won’t let you go. The sister of one of the shooters, Patricia, has stewed in resentment for years and is now resolved to punish the survivors, in particular, those most responsible for ending the attack before hundreds were murdered. The story follows them into the future where Reed has become a police officer, now partnering with Essie, and Simone is finding her way as an artist. They, their friends, and family are transformed by the tragedy. The story focuses on a few of the survivors, Simone whose call to 9-1-1 saved many lives, Reed who rescued a young boy, and Essie, the cop who shot one of the killers. In addition to exploring how people were affected by the shooting, she added the complication of an unknown conspirator who seeks revenge on those who survived. Nora Roberts turns her talented hand to the subject in her upcoming novel Shelter in Place. Y’all know I prefer my fiction dark (and steamy).America is unlucky enough to have a literary subgenre all its own And the darkness explored in Patricia’s character hit the spot.

I like some thriller/suspense with my romance (and some romance with my thriller/suspense). ⠀Īnd finally, I found the plot engaging, well-written, and just unpredictable enough to keep me reading. Reed is the unflappable yet spunky, solid, driven, protective type who balances the CiCi + Simone artistic, feminine energy so well.

The dynamic between Simone and Reed is palpable, yet understated. Second, I’m a sucker for the creative artist + man in uniform combo. My heart was in stitches probably beyond the author’s hope. To witness CiCi’s relationship with and love for and influence on her granddaughter, Simone (MC), was so life-giving. Possibly foremost, one of the supporting characters, CiCi Lennon, was the absolute SUM of my Grama and my dear friend, Emily. 2021 Book 2: SHELTER IN PLACE by cut to the chase…I loved this book.
